What is PV mounting structure?

Photovoltaic mounting structures (also known as solar mounting systems) are used to support solar arrays on any surface, usually on a roof or directly on the ground, but also on the side of a building.

Since roof supports are generally less expensive, more people prefer to use the structural support of an existing roof. However, ground mounted systems are easier to access and maintain, and working on the roof presents more safety concerns. The wall-mounted system generates less electricity than the roof and ground-mounted systems, so fewer people choose, unless there are no roof and ground-mounted conditions, the wall-mounted system will be selected.

On roofs, most supports consist of frames fastened to roof beams and rafter structures. If a roof penetration system is not required, such as on clay tile roofs, metal roofs or flat roofs where water may accumulate, the racking system can be freestanding and ballasted.

Ground mounted racking systems are either metal frames fastened to cement slabs or pole mounted to facilitate clearing below, such as in heavy snow areas or in dual-purpose systems such as agro-photovoltaics, combining agriculture with solar panels .

Most shelf assemblies in roof and ground mounted systems are constructed of high-grade aluminum and stainless steel. An important consideration is the strength of the rack, which needs to support snow and strong winds in many areas. A robust racking system may support snow loads of up to 90 psi and winds of 190 mph.
